Transition Fortnight

During transition fortnight, Year 4 worked as part of a class production line for our Summer Carnival. The class thought of products they would like to make and then worked in small groups to pitch their idea to the rest of the class. The class then voted for which product they would like to make and sell through a secret ballot, linking to our British Values theme of democracy. They class have worked hard at designing their product, applying for the job they would like, making the product and preparing it to sell. We linked our mathematic knowledge to the theme of enterprise where we discussed profit and loss. From this, the class decided on the price that the magnets would be sold for, ensuring that we made profit.

The class also participated in a break out day, where we watched a short movie about Bibo, who is a robot. The class participated in a number of activities writing a recount of the movie, an explanation of how robots work, a prequel of how Bibo ended up alone and they designed their own robot, writing a short biography.

Year 4 have had a fantastic two weeks transition and I am sure they will have a great holiday and come back to school refreshed and ready to go!

Spring Term 2

During Spring term year 5 have delved into the Wizarding World of Hogwarts in the topic of ‘Read around the World’. We became reports have reported on the attack of the green, mountainous troll in the girl’s bathroom as well as writing our first flashback to when Harry’s parents were killed by ‘you know who’. We have written excellent character descriptions and setting descriptions of the wonderful school as well as creating our own haiku poems.

We visited the residents at the Old Vicarage Residential home and had a great afternoon reading stories to them. We hope we put a smile on their faces.
We dressed in red for Red Nose Day and we raised money for Comic Relief. We discussed about charity work and how this links with our British Values.

Autumn Term

In year 5 we began the school year learning all about British Values and what it means to be British. We had a great time exploring this topic and participated in a fantastic role play afternoon, where we all became members of a Crown Court. This was a great way to learn about the rule of law and the consequences if you don’t abide by them.

During this week, we learned about how Britain is a democratic country and why we have the right to vote. As a class we produced manifestos as to why we should support different charities. After hearing all the declarations we voted for the charity we would like to support throughout the year. The winner of the vote was WWF (World Wildlife Fund). We look forward to raising money for this charity.

We have now begun our new topic on Earth and Space and have researched and found lots of amazing facts about the movement of the Earth, moon and sun. We have also been learning about Neil Armstrong and the first moon landing. We can’t wait to learn incredible facts and explore this topic further.

Spring Term 1

In year 5 we have been learning about our new topic ‘Death, Disease and Disaster.’ We began the topic by learning all about the plague, symptoms of the plague and how the plague spread so rapidly. Did you know, if you had the plague, the plague doctors locked you up in a house and painted a red cross on the door as a sign that people inside the house were infected?

We then moved on from the plague and learnt all about the Great Fire of London. The Great Fire of London actually helped stop the plague from spreading as it killed the majority of the rat population.

We wrote an information text all about the plague, a diary entry, as though we were a citizen of a plague ridden town, We became newspaper reporters and reported the terrible events of the fire. Finally, we became authors; we wrote our own chaptered narrative using the Great Fire of London as our setting.

To end the fabulous half term we have been learning all about the musical Wicked during our fortnightly break out. Wicked came before the film The Wizard of Oz and many of the characters are the same. We have written our own story, using the script from the musical as inspiration. We have created a character profile for the characters and discussed how everyone may look different on the outside, but on the inside, we are all the same. We understand how what we say can be hurtful to somebody and that we need to take responsibility for our actions.
