Our vision at St. Paul’s is to inspire the smallest seeds to flourish so that everyone can reach their full potential. Through our art curriculum and wider school opportunities, we want our children to develop a passion for art and design which allows them to express themselves using imagination and creativity.

 

The National Curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:  

• Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
• Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

 

Our Art Curriculum:

Intent

At the core of our school curriculum lie our STAR Curriculum drivers: Success, The World, Aspiration and Resilience.

At St Paul’s Church of England Primary School, our art curriculum is designed to engage, inspire, and challenge our children to be expressive learners. We pride ourselves on providing every student with an immersive and inspirational curriculum which fosters a passion for art and design.

Our ambitious curriculum equips learners with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Throughout their time at St Paul’s CE Primary School, learners are encouraged to develop an understanding of the world around us; recognising the ways in which art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity, and wealth of our nation.

 

Implementation

At St Paul’s CE Primary School, we follow the Kapow Art and Design scheme of work and also work termly with our resident artist to further learn about artists both locally and from around the world. The scheme is developed around four strands that run throughout. These are:

• Making skills
• Formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern and colour)
• Knowledge of artists
• Evaluating

Art and Design units are covered over a series of lessons each term.

Throughout the scheme of work, all of these strands are revisited in every unit. The knowledge and skills from these units are applied throughout other units in the scheme. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to revise and build upon their previous learning.

Clear progression throughout the school is evident and the children’s passion for art is promoted through the critique and appreciation of other artists. The four topics pupils cover each year are:

• Drawing
• Painting and Mixed Media
• Sculpture and 3D
• Craft and Design

Impact:

Art lessons are designed in such a way that children are involved in the evaluation, dialogue and decision making about the quality of their outcomes and the improvements they need to make.

The impact of our art curriculum is closely monitored through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. Assessment linked to each lesson learning objective is ongoing by teachers and each unit has a unit quiz and knowledge catcher which can be used at the start and end of the unit.

Pupils will leave primary school equipped with a range of techniques and the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their Art and Design learning for Key Stage 3 and beyond.

The expected impact of art at St Paul's CE Primary School is for pupils to:

• Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences
• Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject-specific language
• Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art
• Meet or exceed the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National Curriculum for Art and Design

Evidence of children’s work and evaluations will be displayed in sketchbooks, art books and on displays around school.

 

Assessment

Assessment is ongoing and both formative and summative. Teachers will base assessment on the skills demonstrated across the topic pupils have been taught each term. As children progress throughout St Pauls CE Primary School, objectives will become increasingly complex, building on the skills from previous years.

 

 

 

Early Years

The EYFS framework is structured very differently to the national curriculum as it is organised across seven areas of learning rather than subject areas.

The most relevant statements for art are taken from the following areas of learning:

• Physical Development
• Expressive Arts and Design
• Communication and Language

In planning and guiding what children learn, practitioners must reflect on the different rates at which children are developing and adjust their practice appropriately, referring to the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning.

These are: playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’; active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy their achievements; creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

The development of children’s artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination and creativity. It is important that children have regular opportunities to engage with the arts, enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. The quality and variety of what children see, hear and participate in is crucial for developing their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the arts. The frequency, repetition and depth of their experiences are fundamental to their progress in interpreting and appreciating what they hear, respond to and observe.

In Early Years, we integrate elements of the Kapow Art and Design Scheme within our provision-based learning and also work termly with our resident artist.

Enhanced art offer [clubs, competitions]

From starting our school in Reception, children have the opportunity to a range of after school art clubs. We currently hold arts and crafts club and drawing club.

 

Awards

At St Paul’s CE Primaary School, we are currently working towards achieving the Artsmark Award to celebrate our commitment to arts and cultural education for our pupils. As this is a new award for our school we are aiming to achieve silver and then progress onto gold as we develop our practice.

In May 2024, we received confirmation from Artsmark that our Statement of Commitment had been accepted and we now have until May 2026 to submit our final documentation for full accrediation.
