PE

Our vision at St. Paul’s is to inspire the smallest seeds to flourish so that everyone can reach their full potential. Through our PE curriculum and wider school opportunities, we want our children to develop a passion for a wide range of sports and physical activity and become active and healthy citizens of the world. We also aim to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing in our children, now and for their future.

The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

Our PE Curriculum:

Intent

At St Paul’s C.E Primary School, physical education is an integral part of our curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that enables all children to achieve their personal best.  Children develop the knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a broad range of sports, physical activities and dance from around the world. Children participate in competitive sport and we teach them to flourish and grow from whatever their starting point maybe. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and be able to make informed decisions to lead healthy and active lives, beyond primary school.

Implementation

- Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week covering different sports/skills each half term. Within P.E, children will study four areas of sport. These include: Gymnastics, Athletics, Games and Dance.

- Pupils and staff wear a P.E kit for every session, by staff wearing one it encourages the children to bring their kit to school.

-Staff follow the National Curriculum and our school’s progression document to ensure progression is evident within each year group and prior skills developed further.

-Teachers use, and adapt, planning and follow a STEP (Space, Task, Equipment, People) Programme, this allows children to take leadership of their lesson and differentiated based on their own ability.

-Teachers assess children termly using our school data tracker and from this information staff further target children in P.E sessions and encourage them to attend the sports leader programme where applicable.

- Planning ensures pupils participate in a variety of sports across school.

- Each half term, PE sessions in each class begin by looking at an expert in the sport that the class is studying. The aim of this is to instil aspirations in our children and understand where their learning can take them.

-Children participate in a variety of competitive sports as part of ‘Sainsbury’s School Games Mark’ and the ‘Great Active Sunderland Schools Charter’ awards.

-30 children from Year’s 5 and 6 are trained as sports leaders and lead physical activities twice a week on a lunch time for all children to participate in.

-Children attend swimming lessons in Year 4, 5 and 6.

-We provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity.  After school sports clubs are offered across all key stages.

-We encourage healthy eating in school for breaks and lunches. Children in EYFS and KS1 are provided with free fruit for all children daily.

- The school work alongside the ‘Healthy Lifestyles Programme’ Sunderland team, who provide lessons on healthy eating and activities to keep healthy and fit.

-Annually, the school celebrates Sport’s Day and the children each belong to a team house.

-Children in KS2 go on outdoor residential trips such as Derwent Hill and Moorhouse.

Impact:

St Paul’s children leave school having a love of sport and physical activity both in and out of school, with the aim for this to continue into later life. Children will have developed aspirations in relation to PE and this will be carried on after leaving KS2, with children continuing to participate for enjoyment or competitively. All children should be able to discuss the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how this is achieved as well as developed skills that underpin life such as teamwork, sportsmanship, self-motivation, resilience and independence.

Assessment

Children will be assessed against their skills in P.E at the end of each half term. Teachers will base this assessment around children’s ability and techniques within each sporting area.

Competitions/sporting events

Children at St Paul’s have access to a number of competitions, which are fully inclusive to all children. All children compete in regular inter-house team tournaments within school PE lesson time.

We have held competitions with other local schools within the community, giving pupils an opportunity to compete in a wide range of sports against other children from other schools.

Children in year 5 and 6, have the opportunity to represent our school football and netball team. In the past, we have had children who have been chosen to attend local football academies to further foster their talent beyond primary school.

Enhanced sporting offer [clubs, competitions, sporting events and Outdoor Play]

From starting our school in Reception, children have the opportunity to a wide range of after school sports clubs. Our clubs throughout the year are: netball, football, gymnastics, dance and circuit training.

We promote and create links with local clubs and organisations around Sunderland, having many of our pupils competing in sporting activities on a weekend, which we celebrate in school.

Outdoor Play

Our school recognises the value of playtime for our children. Play promotes cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being, offering the necessary conditions for children to thrive and learn.

Please see our Outdoor Play section on our website for more information.

Structured Afternoon Breaks

Sunderland has been identified as having a high proportion of children leaving Primary school as obese, we believe by providing a structured break time every afternoon this will help to encourage our children to become more active and supports their mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing.

Awards

Each year, we take part in a number of awards and accreditations, with the aim of providing as much physical activity and sporting opportunities as possible for our pupils. Since, the Active Sunderland Award was introduced to Sunderland our school has obtained the gold status. We have worked extremely hard to receive the Platinum status for the Sunderland School Games, which we are very proud of.
